ARIN is now accepting applications for our 2022 awards. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted by October 31, 2021.

Congratulations to our 2021 winners!

CRN Scholarship Award: Jennifer Simoneaux, RN

Jennifer has been in Radiology Nursing for 14 years. She currently serves as the Lead Neuro-Endovascular Nurse and has assisted with the DNV certification for the last 3 years.  What she loves most about nursing is "educating patients about their procedures and the seeing the progress of patients after a mechanical thrombectomy." Something interesting about Jennifer: "I wanted to be a professional singer before I became a nurse."

Charlotte Godwin Award: Andrew Somers, MSN, RN, CRN, CN IV

Andrew has been in Radiology Nursing for about 13 years. What he loves most about nursing "are the endless opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of others." Something interesting about Andrew: "I lived in China for three years where I helped teach English. It often brings a smile to our Mandarin speaking patients when I start chatting with them in Mandarin."

Helen Malenock Award: Adela Tan, RN

Adela has 26 years of RN Clinical and management experiences combined. She has been a Radiology RN at UCSF for 6 years. She graduated from the University of the Philippines where learning was not just being the best in didactic and research but also about giving the most  compassionate, holistic and best nursing care to each individual patient, making them feel that they are the most important part the team! Something interesting about Adela: "I am married to an Italian Stallion." The motto that guides her is the Golden Rule: "Do not do unto others what you do not want others do unto you"

Radiology Nurse of the Year: Mary Sousa, BSN, RN

Mary was introduced to radiology nursing in 1985 when she worked in Special Procedures. She went on to work in a variety of critical care areas, including interventional cardiology. Mary had a difficult time telling us just one thing she loves about nursing as there are "so many incredible things that I love about it." But she finally settled on "the satisfaction I feel after taking care of a patient and their family.  I enjoy the challenge of making my patients comfortable, relieving pain and anxiety, and keeping them safe during procedures. Care in radiology is delivered by a team. I have been privileged to have worked with so many wonderful nurses, proceduralists, technologists."

An interesting fact about Mary: I have lived in three countries and English is my second language. I was born on the island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores. Sao Miguel is the largest of the nine islands that constitute this archipelago region of Portugal. My family immigrated to an area outside of Toronto, Canada where we lived for seven years. Eventually, we moved to the US and settled in the Boston area. I have three siblings, two were born in Canada and one in the US. We often joke that we have our own “little UN”.

The Linda Strangio Editor’s Award: Kathleen Hirsch, MSN, RN, ACNP, Perelman School of Medicine, University of  Pennsylvania, Dept of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery, Philadelphia, PA, Lewis J. Kaplan, MD, FACS, FCCM, FCCP, Perelman School of Medicine, University  of Pennsylvania, Dept of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery, Philadelphia, PA and Corporal Michael J Crescenz VA Medical Center, Surgical Services, and Cynthia Blank-Reid, MSN, RN, TCRN, CEN, Temple University Hospital, Department of Trauma, Burn and Surgical Critical Care Services, Philadelphia, PA for their Journal article: "Issues in managing injured adolescents in the interventional radiology suite after penetrating trauma" that appeared in the  2020 issue of the Journal of Radiology Nursing (Vol 39 #4, pp 309-313)
