Nursing Considerations for Stroke Prevention in COVID-19 Patients

This abstract seeks to discuss the prevalence of thromboembolic stroke in COVID patients, highlight the lasting neurological deficits present in many recovered COVID patients, to discuss thromboembolic prevention in the setting of COVID hypercoagulopathy, and to teach bedside nurses and nurse practitioners techniques for screening for strokes in intubated and sedated COVID patients.

Elicia Fox Chaney has worked in Interventional Rdiology for 5 years, and has been a nurse practitioner in the department of Neuro Interventional Radiology at UCSF for three years. During this time she has focused on both patient-centered education and developed teaching materials for  UCSF graduate students in both the school of medicine and nursing. Her special focus is in expanding the role of the nurse practitioner into the procedural realm in Neuro IR and she has established a strong independent practice in the spine injection clinic as well as the role of the NP procedural first assist.
